Norma Kamali's Designs Live in My Head Rent-Free—Her Beauty Picks Are Next

By Aniyah Morinia

As I'm sure you can imagine, a ton of brands live in my head rent-free. I'm exposed to designers, products, and runway shows on a daily basis, so it's only natural that I daydream about certain items. A few months ago, I was fixated on the Norma Kamali Diana gown, which you may have seen on Carrie Bradshaw in And Just Like That. As the weather gets colder, I'm fixating on Norma Kamali's iconic sleeping-bag coat. Are you noticing a trend here? After more than 50 years in the fashion industry, Kamali has a way of thinking ahead of the curve and creating of-the-moment styles that keep shoppers on their toes. But Kamali has made waves in the industry for more than her legendary namesake company (which I can't stop shopping, by the way).

Norma Kamali’s Beauty Routine Before Special Events

By Liz Ritter

The correct adjective for anything-everything describing Norma Kamali is “ageless” and, as a recent mindbodygreen interview with the iconic designer so succinctly drives it home: “Not to be hyperbolic, but I’d take advice from Norma Kamali on just about anything.”

One of the best beauty takeaways from her go-to list: A little off-the-radar skin-care science for the eternally youthful-looking 77-year-old. “I’m someone who’s always interested in the science behind ingredients before I use it. It was originally used for healing, so it’s incredibly effective at treating and smoothing the texture of the skin. I have found Biopelle’s products to be unbelievably helpful. They have this concentrated product called Tensage Intensive Serum 40 Post Procedure Ampoules ($136)—which are supposed to help repair your skin after a treatment or surgery—and I use them in preparation for a special event. Didn’t think I would be a snail mucus fan, but here I am.”

A 76-Year-Old Wellness Expert's Secret To Glowing Skin

By Brie Schmidt

Fashion designer and healthy aging guru Norma Kamali couldn't care less about trends. For her, timelessness will always trump gone-in-a-flash fads. And maybe that's why she's had such a long, thriving career in the fashion industry. Kamali, who started designing apparel in 1969, told The Cut that she didn't want to become a big name in fashion, only to disappear shortly after — a pattern she noticed in many of her peers. To remain relevant decade after decade, she makes "clothes that are timeless, that function, that serve a purpose, and that make people happy and feel good about themselves."

Her approach to skincare echoes these ideas, with timelessness being key for Kamali. Maybe that's why the 76-year-old doesn't look a day over 50. Though TikTok may be flooded with the latest skincare and beauty trends, Kamali prefers a no-fuss routine. She told The Beauty School podcast that she used to take over two hours to get ready in the morning, but now she believes simpler is better, saying, "The more you simplify, the better you look."

Norma Kamali’s Skin Care Routine Is All About Simplicity and Self-Care

By Calin Van Paris

Norma Kamali has always been ahead of the curve (or carving it out said curve herself). Since 1967, the 76-year-old designer has played in the arena of conceptual fashion, ‘70s camping trip-inspired sleeping bag coats, ‘80s sweatsuits paving the supremely comfortable path toward athleisure, and ‘90s e-commerce options offering a foundation for the present-tense world of online retail. Style aside, Kamali is also a vanguard of the beauty-as-wellness space, her focus on holistic self-care beginning well before Y2K. With a lifestyle brand that includes The Skinline from Normalife (crafted with inclusivity in mind), Kamali is all about plant-based, multi-purpose products meant to simplify your everyday routine.

Fashion Icon Norma Kamali On Her New Home Collection, Side Hustles And Hot Pants

By Amy Shoenthal

People spending more time at home than ever before has paved the way for the “home as a sanctuary” trend. As more people turn to their homes as cross functional spaces, some have gotten creative about how they view those spaces. Iconic fashion designer Norma Kamali started turning her home into a retreat in the early days of the pandemic. She found herself clutching a pillow to relieve stress and find comfort. She even created a movement on social media called #HugAPillow.

She eventually harnessed her creative energy to design her own oversized pillow, a versatile piece that can be used for meditation, relaxing and retreating into any room. I spoke with Kamali just after last month’s launch to reflect on her pandemic experience and what moved her from designing for the runway to the home.

Norma Kamali has designed a pillow and–of course–it's made of swimsuit fabric

By Vanessa Lawrence

In 1976, the actress Farrah Fawcett was photographed for a poster wearing a sizzling red one-piece swimsuit, her tousled blond waves cascading over her shoulders, her wide smile blinding. The image has since become iconic and so, too, has the designer of the suit in question, Norma Kamali, a fashion veteran who, over the course of 53 years, has become known for her innovative, prescient creations like sleeping bag coats (worn by doormen at Studio 54, no less) and high-heeled sneakers. This month, Kamali is expanding her deep familiarity with bathing suits to characteristically unexpected territory: She is launching a home line whose pieces are covered in swimwear fabrics.
